Introduction
You probably already know you want to be working in the music industry, but are unsure which part of the music industry. When you think of working in the music industry you most likely think of the singers and performers, no doubt they are the most visible people in the music industry but most certainly they are not the only ones involved in the music industry. There are a lot of people involved behind-the-scenes to make things possible in the music industry. For an overview of some of the careers available in the music career you can visit our blog post here. Picking the right career in the music industry is a struggle for a lot of people. In this post we outline a method we personally believe works best for finding the right career in music. Well, let’s get to it.
Identify your areas of interest
The first thing to do is to identify the areas of music that interest you. When listening to your favorite song, think about what you would like to have contributed to this song; this could be the one singing, the one who produced the song, the person that wrote the song, the person who promoted the song. I think it is best to be aware of some of the careers in the music industry just to give you an idea of what is available, you can check out a blog post about this here. Once you have done all this, write a list of the top 5 careers that interest you.

Research
Research, Research Research, I cannot stress this enough. Research is very crucial when picking a career, I mean you need to have information about what you are getting yourself into. Go online and research about the top 5 interests on your list. Find out things like the skills needed, the average salary, the average work hours, what it entails etc. All this information and more is very important because it informs you about the career. A career is a long-term commitment whether it is full-time or part-time, so you need to know if you are able to make this commitment to a particular career.

Pick & Prepare Yourself
Once you’ve done your research, pick the career you find most appealing. Do one last analysis of that career just to cross-check and confirm that is what you would like to go ahead with it. Once you have done the analysis and you are absolutely sure then, Congratulations!!! Now the real work has begun. You need to prepare yourself for the career you have chosen. As a starting point you could check out our tip on getting started as a musician here.
